A Model for Creative Teaching: Using VIdegree to Increase Interaction with Less Effort

Moving the classroom onto the cloud

Leaving footprints of the earning process. Increasing teacher-student interaction through social media platform. Managing and grouping of courses made easy.

 The setting is the first day of class at the National Taiwan Normal University in Design Theory. The professor uses an Ipad to project material onto a screen ahead. Students provide responses, interact, look for information , all directly on the cloud. A new innovative way of teaching which combines technology and learning is in the process of making waves. 

 

"Taiwanese students are too used to being spoon-fed information, but art is alive, it exists in each our lives. If the curriculum is too rigid, the teaching is uninspiring, and it distresses me," expressed National Taiwan Normal University Professor Lin Da-Long. The fact that Taiwan lacks innovative talent like Steve Jobs, has given Professor Lin a greater conviction to teach his students using logical, cumulative, convenient and interactive teaching methods in the hopes of nurturing a next generation of students with greater cultural and creative talent.

For several years, he has contemplated on how to come up with a better way of teaching.  In VIdegree, the professor is the administrator. Students can then just register and start using the platform. Professor Lin uses tagging to group students by project they are responsible for, explaining that, "For a professor, being able to very clearly manage and organize students by project allows students to also engage each other through the platform." Students can freely upload information they've gathered, work pieces, and engage in discussion through comments. The teacher can also view comments and responses to provide guidance. All you have to do is select a tag, and the information you want to find appears." it's "Really Awesome!" expressed Professor Lin.

 In addition, students can view lecture contents by week or subject. They can even upload supplementary information onto the cloud and engage in interaction with the teacher. Students have also been very active in engaging in online discussion, "Which is a direct contrast with traditional teaching methods where when the professor asks if anyone has a question, they are always met with silence," stated Professor Lin.

This system has been an even greater blessing for our graduate students, "Both graduate students and professors are extremely busy. Either the professor can't find the student, or the student can't find the professor." Professor Lin further emphasizes that, "The teaching process is very important, through VIdegree can provide guidance at any time. Students can think of something in the middle of the night and leave a comment, and I will still receive it. I can then respond which leaves footprints of the student's learning process. In comparison to email, it always becomes impossible to know which version is the most recent. Under the continuous and cumulative guidance of the professor, students are able to have a research direction in mind by the early stages of their graduate career. A lot of time is spent on back and forth discussion. Trying out this new method of teaching has given us an entirely new experience and we have all gained something from it."
